Tech Competing at VT Elite Meet

Feb. 7, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete at the VT Elite meet Friday-Saturday in the Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va.

The Yellow Jackets will be part of a field that includes seven schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference as well as three teams ranked in the national top 10. Both men’s and women’s teams from Penn State, Georgia, Clemson, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest and Miami will be competing at the meet along with the women’s teams from Tennessee and West Virginia.

“This week’s invitational hosted by Virginia Tech will give us a great opportunity to compete against quality fields, including many ACC competitors,” women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “It comes in the middle of a three week swing of outstanding competition as we continue to prepare for the ACC Championships. We will travel with a smaller roster, giving some of our student-athletes a weekend to stay home and continue training.”

“The Virginia Tech Elite meet offers our team members another great opportunity for outstanding performances,” added men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “They have an excellent facility that has, over the years, produced great times. We put up some great numbers last week in Lexington and I look for the same effort and results throughout the upcoming weekend.”

Six Yellow Jackets have achieved NCAA Championship qualifying times or marks this season. Senior’s Fatmata Fofanah and Shantia Moss have each automatically qualified in the 60-meter hurdles. Senior James Lemons II and sophomore Alphonso Jordan achieved provisional marks in the triple jump. Last weekend, junior Andy Powlen provisionally qualified in the shot put and senior Derek Hoye provisionally qualified in the 800-meter.

After this weekends meet, the Jackets will continue their indoor season next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 15-16 by sending members of the squad to both the Iowa State Classic and the Tiger Invitational.
