THE FLATS – Georgia Tech rebounded from a tough loss Friday night to whip Old Dominion, 5-2, in the opener of a Sunday men’s tennis double-header at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

Scratching out the doubles point was the only real drama for the 46th-ranked Yellow Jackets, who improved to 5-1 this spring. The Monarchs dropped to 6-2.

Tech won the doubles point after its No. 2 and 3 teams needs tiebreakers to complete their matches. The Jackets No. 1 team of Eduardo Segura and Carlos Benito won easily, 6-2, to remain unbeaten this spring. Freshmen Cole Fiegel and Will Showers lost their tiebreaker, 7-2, in court 3, but Casey Kay and Nathan Rakitt finished off the Monarchs’ Dante Terenzio and Zvonimir Podvinski, 7-4, minutes later.

The Jackets went on to get straight-set wins from Segura at court 3, Fiegel at court 5 and Showers at court 6 to clinch the match. Segura, a junior, defeated Dante Terenzio, 6-2, 6-2, to improve to 4-2 this spring, while Fiegel, a freshman, got by Darragh Glavin, 6-3, 6-2, improving to 5-1. Showers, a freshman, earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Koen Wiggemans.

Carlos Benito earned Tech’s fifth point with a 6-5, 6-2 win over Jonas Kuwert at the No. 2 position, improving his record to 4-1 this spring. Nathan Rakitt lost on court one to 44th-ranked Carlos Lopez Villa in three sets, and Casey Kay dropped a three-set match to Zvonimir Podvinski at No. 4.

Tech faces The Citadel in the back half of Sunday’s double-header at 5 p.m.
