Tech Basketball Mourns the Loss of Alan Nass

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s basketball program mourns the loss of one of its Hall of Fame members, center Alan Nass, who passed away Monday morning at the age of 80 at his home in Huntingburg, Ind.

One of many members of the Yellow Jackets’ basketball program recruited from the state of Indiana by legendary head coach Whack Hyder, Nass was offered 50 college scholarships in football and basketball, but he chose Georgia Tech and graduated in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. He was a three-year starter, serving as team captain in the 1962-63 season when the Jackets posted a 21-5 record. Nass was named to the Academic All-Southeastern Conference team in 1962 and 1963. He was then awarded the Callaway Mills Scholarship and graduated in 1965 with a master of science in industrial engineering.

Nass graduated from the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in 1968, where he was class Valedictorian. He received his funeral director license and went on to be President of Nass and Son, Inc. Funeral Home for 40 years. In 1984, he was made a member of the Silver Anniversary All-State High School Basketball team; and in 2013 was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Nass was recognized for his many achievements; these range from athleticism, academics, being a business man, family man and most importantly a friend to many.

Nass is survived by his wife, Connie Nass of Huntingburg, Ind.; two sons, Andy (Sammy Stills) Nass of Huntingburg, Ind. and Stephen Nass of Evansville, Ind.; his sister, Phyllis Perry of Auburn, Ind.; and by two granddaughters, Alexis Mishel of Westfield, Ind. and Anna Mishel of Denver, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his daughter, Susan Mishel, who passed away on September 14, 2020; and brother-in-law, Keith Perry.

Memorial contributions can be made to Salem United Church of Christ. Condolences may be shared online at www.nassandson.com.
