THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis advanced to the quarterfinals of the Men’s Tennis ACC Tournament, defeating Miami 4-1. The Yellow Jackets were buoyed by clinching wins from Keshav Chopra and Chen Dong in doubles and Chopra in singles.
“I felt pretty confident knowing that we had already gotten three points,” Chopra said. “I recalled the same situation last season, being up 5-4 in the third, knowing that if I win this match we could get the win. I felt that confidence again and pulled it out.”
The doubles point was tied up at one after Andres Martin and Marcus McDaniel won their doubles match 6-3. The lone remaining match was on court three with Chopra and Dong. The match was level at five with Miami serving. The Jackets broke Miami’s serve and then an ace from Chopra up 6-5 clinched the match, and the doubles point, for Tech.
The Yellow Jackets swarmed the singles point, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after wins on courts five and two. Pablo Schelcher made quick work on court five, winning his match 6-2, 6-1. McDaniel was the next to finish when he clinched his match on court two 6-3, 6-4.
Miami clawed back one match and with the score at 3-1 in favor of Georgia Tech and all matches were in their third set. The Jackets would need just one match to go their way to secure the win.
Chopra was up 4-3 at the time. As his teammates cheered him on from court two, Chopra would take the match 6-4 clinching the match for the Yellow Jackets.
The White and Gold will face the No. 2 seed Wake Forest on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
