GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech softball earned the No. 10 seed in the 2023 ACC Softball Championship in Notre Dame, Ind., drawing a matchup with host and No. 7 seed Notre Dame on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Melissa Cook Stadium in the opening round. The winner will advance to face No. 2 seed Duke on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
The tournament will be hosted May 10-13 by Notre Dame at Melissa Cook Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. Following quarterfinal action Thursday, semifinals will be held on Friday with the championship following on Saturday at 1 p.m. All tournament competition through the semifinals will be broadcast live on ACC Network, and the championship game will air on ESPN2.
The Yellow Jackets (25-26, 7-17 ACC) will face the Fighting Irish (29-16-1, 11-12-1 ACC) for the first time this season. The most recent series between the two fell a season ago, resulting in a pair of extra-inning affairs with both teams scoring double-digit runs after Georgia Tech claimed the opener, 9-8.
Last season, the White and Gold earned a win in the opening round of the ACC Championship for the third consecutive year. After run-ruling Virginia in 2019, 8-0 (5), senior hurler Blake Neleman headlined the 2021 tournament by tossing a historic no-hitter on the way to a 6-0 victory over Syracuse. Tech’s longtime ace led the way once again a year ago, tying her career high of 13 strikeouts with no earned runs in a complete game that resulted in a 4-2 victory over NC State. The Jackets hadn’t won an ACC tournament game since 2012 prior to 2019.
Tech is 36-34 in its history in the ACC Championship dating back to 1990. Along with four regular season titles, the Yellow Jackets own five ACC tournament titles. Georgia Tech was most recently crowned champion of the ACC by way of the tournament in 2012. Tech won both the regular season and ACC Championship tournament titles back-to-back in 2009-10 as well as in 2005. The Jackets’ first ACC Tournament title came in 2002, when they earned their first NCAA Regional berth in program history. The Yellow Jackets own winning records over six of their eight ACC tournament foes over the years in Boston College (3-0), North Carolina (7-3), NC State (3-1), Syracuse (1-0), Virginia (10-8) and Virginia Tech (3-1).
