ATHENS, Ga. — One day on the Torrin Lawrence Invite the Georgia Tech track and field saw multiple top-five finishes from their student-athletes at the Spec Towns Track on Friday night.
“The strong winds on day one made it a real challenge for the oval racers today. Straightaway competitors were all smiles, and the women had some very solid performances in the long jump. Attallah Smith and Alexis Kitchens jumped PRs and Bria Matthews jumped a season-best mark,” noted men’s track and field head coach Grover Hinsdale.
Smith performed at a high level for the Jackets as she finished in eighth in the women’s long jump with a personal best mark of 6.04m, while Kitchens jumped a personal best mark of 5.66m, also in the long jump.
“Kendria Edouard seemed to handle the windy conditions very well running a very nice PR in the 400m hurdles and finishing in fourth with a time of 1:02.82,” added Hinsdale.
On the men’s side, Maurice Simpson and Nasir Christian both ran PRs in the 200m. Simpson finished in third with a PR of 21.04, while Christian turned in a time of 23.73.
Action will pick up tomorrow in both Philadelphia and in Athens with the Penn Relays beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the Torrin Lawrence Invite starting at 11:00 a.m.
