MISCELLANEOUS NOTES • Georgia Tech captains: senior LB Quayshawn Nealy, senior RG Shaquille Mason, and sophomore QB Justin Thomas • 22 seniors were recognized prior to the game as part of Saturday’s Senior Day festivities – B.J. Bostic, Matt Connors, Andrew Chau, Synjyn Days, Corey Dennis, Adrian Gardner, Shawn Green, Deon Hill, Isaiah Johnson, Zach Laskey, Shaquille Mason, Tremaine McNair, Sam McNearney, Quayshawn Nealy, Charles Perkins, Joshua Rogers, Matt Serpico, DeAndre Smelter, Will Smith, Kyle Travis, Darren Waller, and Tony Zenon. • Clemson is Georgia Tech’s fourth-most played rival. Saturday was the 80th series meeting between the schools and the first in Atlanta since 2011. • Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 51-27-2, including a 44-13-2 mark at home. • Tech has won five straight at home vs. Clemson — with the Tigers’ last win in 2003. • Saturday was the 17th time that Georgia Tech was ranked when playing Clemson – and the first with both teams ranked since the 2009 ACC Championship Game. The Jackets are 13-4 when ranked against the Tigers. • Georgia Tech is 7-0 this season when leading at halftime. Paul Johnson is 75-9 as FBS head coach when his team is leading at the half. • Georgia Tech’s six ACC wins are the most by the Jackets since winning seven in 2009.
TEAM NOTES • Against ranked opponents, Coach Johnson is 7-2 at home and 9-12 overall. • This was the first time Clemson has been held without a touchdown since a 13-3 loss on Sept. 29, 2007 to Georgia Tech. • This is Georgia Tech’s first win against a ranked team since beating #6/6 Clemson on Oct. 29, 2011. • Georgia Tech has played 222 consecutive games without being shut out – the eighth-longest active streak in the nation. The Jackets haven’t been shut out since Oct. 18, 1997 at Florida State. • Georgia Tech hasn’t allowed an opponent to score on its opening possession in six straight games (since TD to Miami on Oct. 4). Tech has only allowed three opponents to score on their opening drive – TD at Tulane, FG at Virginia Tech, and TD vs. Miami. • Georgia Tech has six defensive TDs this season – five interception returns and one fumble. Jamal Golden’s pick-6 was the Jackets’ first defensive TD at home this season. The first four were all on the road. • Georgia Tech has at least one takeaway in five straight games. • The Jackets now have scored four defensive TDs in last two games. • The last time the Yellow Jackets had two pick-six was against Elon in 2013 when Tyler Marcordes and Chris Milton both returned interceptions for touchdowns. • The Yellow Jackets have scored 116 points off of 24 turnovers this season. • The last time the Yellow Jackets held an opponent to zero touchdowns was against Syracuse in 2013 (56-0 win). • The six points scored by Clemson were the least amount of points an opponent has scored since the Jacket shut out Syracuse, 56-0, in 2013.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES • Senior DB Jamal Golden recorded his first-career defensive TD, returning an interception thrown by Cole Stout 85 yards for a TD – his first TD since 2012 (two kick returns for a score that season). • Senior WR DeAndre Smelter became the 21st 1,000-yard receiver in Georgia Tech history after recording five receptions for 77 yards against Clemson. Smelter has 1,016 career reception yards. • Junior quarterback Justin Thomas’ 1,061 career rushing yards rank fifth among Georgia Tech quarterbacks and his 826 rushing yards this season are third on the single-season rushing yards for quarterbacks. • Golden’s 85-yard pick-6 is tied for the seventh longest in school history and the longest since Tyler Marcordes’ 95-yard return vs. Elon in 2013. • Brodderick Snoddy’s 43-yard rush in the second quarter was a career long. • Justin Thomas’ 65-yard run on the first play of the second half was a career long. • Senior B-Back Synjyn Days became the 45th 1,000-yard rusher in school history – and second in as many weeks – with a 9-yard rush at the end of the second quarter. • Senior B-Back Zach Laskey ranks 18th on Georgia Tech’s career rushing list with 1,790 yards.
