LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Nahom Solomon led Georgia Tech men’s cross country to an eighth-place finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Friday, finishing fourth with a career-best 23:21.2 time at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville. Solomon’s performance is tied-second-best all-time in Tech program history at the ACC Championships.
Mary Prouty paced the women’s team to a 12th-place finish, placing 28th overall with a 21:01.2 time.
The men tallied 238 points overall, just 32 points behind seventh-place Notre Dame and 23 points ahead of Duke. The women finished with 258 points, giving them an edge over Boston College (348), Clemson (378) and Miami (461) while being just 14 points behind North Carolina.
“Let’s start with Nahom Solomon, he was just outstanding, what a courageous and inspirational race he ran today,” head coach Alan Drosky said. “Congrats to him, he has been incredibly focused and has worked so hard for this and we are very proud of him.”
Drosky continued, “After that, it was a disappointing day for both teams, there is no getting around that. The conference is so dense in the middle that if you are not on, you are going to fall back pretty quick. And we weren’t on today. That’s on all of us, but mostly on us coaches and on me. So we’ll learn from this and bounce back, and hopefully put an exclamation point on this season in two weeks at regionals.”
After Solomon, the Yellow Jackets saw fine performances from Avery Bartlett (24:40.5) and Matt Munns (24:41.1), who finished 57th and 58th, respectively. Frank Pittman also turned in a nice 24:55.9 outing (69th) before Tanner Shaw crossed the finish line at 70th with a time of 24:56.4.
Behind Prouty, Tech was paced by freshman Nicole Fegans, who finished 44th with a 21:22.5 time, while Amy Ruiz placed 57th with her 21:44.5 mark. Hailey Gollnick finished 69th with a 21:53.4 time while Mary Claire Solomon rounded out the first-five for the Jackets with a 70th placing in 21:56.5.
Georgia Tech cross country will now prepare for the NCAA Regional Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 10.
