THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team (1-5) opens its 2017 home slate on Friday when it hosts a portion of the second-ever ACC/Big Ten Softball Challenge. The Jackets welcome Iowa (2-3), Penn State (1-4) and Virginia Tech (3-1) to Mewborn Field. Admission to all of the games is free.

Fans should park in the McCamish Lot for all three days of the tournament. Parking in that lot is free. On Sunday, Feb. 19, be advised that there are several events happening on campus and parking for softball is available in the McCamish Lot as well as on Eighth and Fowler Streets at no charge.
Friday – Poster giveaway
Saturday – Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer – The team will wear gold show laces to honor Hayden Hudgens – a little girl battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The team will sell gear (cash or check) and the proceeds will benefit Hayden’s family.
Sunday – Sunday Fun Day – Post-game: kids run the bases, and the team is available for photos and autographs
-The Jackets have turned six double plays this season through six games to rank second in the nation and first in the ACC in double plays turned per game.
– The six double plays are already more than 25% of the total double plays turned a season ago (20).
– Three of the plays involved line drives, while the other three were grounders turned into double plays.
– The Jackets achieved their first win in Panthersville, Ga. since March 1, 2011 with a score of 8-3 on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
– Tech hit five home runs in the game – two by Samantha Pierannunzi, and one each by Kelsey Chisholm, Jessica Kowalewicz and Malea Bell.
