Sixth-Seeded Jackets Face No. 11 Northwestern at NCAA Championships

May 17, 2006

STANFORD, Calif. – The sixth-seeded Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (23-5), 4-0 winners in both matches at the 2006 NCAA Atlanta Regional this past weekend, will face the 11th-seeded Northwestern Wildcats Thursday at 9 a.m. PT in the NCAA Championships Round of 16 match on the Taube South Courts at Stanford University.

Fans may watch the NCAA Championships from start to finish by clicking on LIVESTATS, which will feature live scoring updates and live, streaming video. Video is only available for matches played on the main Taube Stadium Courts, so it will not be available Tuesday, however livestats for every NCAA Championships match will be working.

The Yellow Jackets own a seven-match win streak headed into Thursday’s match, during which they captured both the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA Atlanta Regional Championships. It marks the second-consecutive season that the Jackets accomplished both feats, and only the second time in the history of the program that Georgia Tech earned the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships.

Tech has faced Northwestern just twice before, with the last meeting coming earlier this season. In that match, the Jackets fell by a 4-3 score, with the win coming down to the last match, which proved to be a three-set battle at the No. 6 singles position.

The Jackets are making their seventh-consecutive NCAA Appearance and have tied the mark for highest finish in a season by advancing to the Round of 16 again in 2006. Last season, in Tech’s first Sweet-16 match, the Jackets fell to the eventual national runner-up, Texas, by a 4-3 score in Athens, Ga.

Tech is one of four ACC schools to make the field of 16, which includes No. 7 seed Miami, eighth-seeded Duke, and No. 9 North Carolina. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels will square off Thursday at 6 p.m. PST with the winner advancing to play the winner of Thursday’s Stanford-TCU match in the quarterfinals on Friday. Miami meets unseeded Fresno State Thursday at 3 p.m.
