Six Yellow Jackets Named To All-ACC Academic Outdoor Track Team

THE FLATS – Six members of the Georgia Tech track and field team have been named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Outdoor Track Team, announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Five men and one woman represented Georgia Tech on the team.

Brandon Lasater, Perron Jones, Eric Powers, Michael Simms and Aaron Unterberger earned the honor on the men’s side, while Jhanelle McLeod was named to the women’s team.  It marks the first outdoor All-ACC Academic team honor for all six student-athletes.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

Lasater owned a 3.53 GPA in electrical engineering to go along with a breakout sophomore season. The Perry, Ga., native is the ACC outdoor 800-meter champion, earned All-ACC first team honors and was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week (April 8).

Jones, a computer science major, posted a 4.0 GPA during the 2013 spring semester. The Augusta, Ga., native is the 2013 Thacker Award winner, which is awarded to student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding performance both in athletic competition and in the classroom and intend to further their education through postgraduate studies at an ACC institution.

Powers was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American second team after maintaining a cumulative 4.0 GPA in chemical and biomolecular engineering. The senior from Mt. Pleasant, S.C. is the 2013 Tau Beta Pi Cup Award winner, the highest honor given to a graduating senior in the Georgia Tech College of Engineering.

Simms earned a 4.0 spring-semester GPA in business management. On the track, the senior sprinter set a career-best 100-meter time of 10.91 at the ACC Championships.

Unterberger was named to the 2013 Indoor All-ACC Academic Team and took that momentum into the outdoor season through which he maintained a 4.0 GPA in industrial engineering. The pole vaulter from Snellville, Ga. is the ACC outdoor pole vault champion and earned All-ACC first team honors.

A public policy major, McLeod earned a 4.0 GPA during her senior season. The Kingston, Jamaica, native is the ACC outdoor triple jump champion, the Georgia Tech outdoor triple jump record holder and was named to the USTFCCCA All-America second team.
