ATLANTA – Georgia Tech junior Shannon Bear and senior Christy Jones were each named to the Capital One Academic All-District softball team as selected by the College Sports Information Director of America (CoSIDA). Bear is a first-team pick and now eligible to be an Academic All-American later this month. Jones, meanwhile, garnered second-team honors.
The academic all-district teams recognize achievements by student-athletes both on and off the field. First team all-district picks are eligible to be first-, second- and third-team Academic All-Americans later this month.
Bear carries a 3.78 GPA as a Biochemistry major and is enjoying a break out junior season. The Grayson, Ga., native is batting .304 with 26 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 31 RBI. She has a .652 slugging percentage and a .385 on-base percentage while committing just one error all season while playing left field and second base. Bear had just 70 at bats in her career before her break-out 2011 campaign is has career-highs in all categories.
Jones has maintained a 3.41 cum GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major. The three-time ACC Academic team member is hitting .333 from the leadoff spot this year for the Yellow Jackets. The Wichita, Kansas native has 27 runs scored, six RBI and leads the ACC with 31 stolen bases in 36 chances. She is currently tied for third all-time at Georgia Tech with 93 career stolen bases and has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage this season.
Bear, Jones and the No. 19/17 Yellow Jackets will wrap up the 2011 regular season this weekend against Florida State at Mewborn Field. The Jackets and Seminoles will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then conclude the regular season with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
