Seven Jackets Head to U.S. Track Nationals

ATLANTA – With a successful collegiate season under their belts, seven Georgia Tech track standouts will now compete against the nation’s best at the 2002 USA Track and Field National Championships, which open Friday at Stanford University’s Cobb Track & Angell Field.

Making the trip for Tech will be men’s stars Brendon Mahoney, Chris Sinotte and Bryan Swarn, as well as top women’s performers Nicole Campbell, Mishanta Reyes and Amandi Rhett. Dana Rogers will compete in the 100-meter hurdles at the USA Junior National Championships.

Mahoney, who earned All-America honors in the indoor mile, will compete in the 800 meters. He owns a season-best time of 1:48.02 set at this spring’s Georgia Tech Invitational. Mahoney will race against former Tech standout David Krummenacker, who is ranked fourth in the world in this event. Other top competitors include Trinity Gray and Michael Stember.

The Atlantic Coast Conference outdoor champion at 400 meters, Swarn will compete in his signature event at Stanford. His top time this season was 45.68, coming at the conference championships. Swarn will race against former Jacket Olympians Derek Mills and Angelo Taylor.

Sinotte, who earned All-America honors will a 10th-place finish in the javelin at the NCAA Championships, will compete in this event. His set a school record with a toss of 237’11.00″ at the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Campbell will race at 800 meters against the likes of Hazel Clark, Regina Jacobs and Nicole Teter, who is ranked sixth in world and owns the American indoor record. Campbell qualified for the NCAA Championships with a mark of 2:04.85 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. She was also the ACC outdoor runner-up at 800 and 1500 meters.

Reyes will compete in the long jump. She owns a wind-aided mark of 20’09.25″, but has posted the outdoor school record with an allowable mark of 20’06.50″.

Rhett will race the likes of Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones, Chryste Gaines and Inger Miller in the 100 meters. Rhett qualified for the NCAA Championships with a season-best time 11.48. She earned All-ACC accolades in the 100 and 200 meters.

All of the Jackets will compete in the first round of their respective events on Friday, except for Sinotte who will compete in the javelin finals on Saturday. Portions of the meet will be televised on ESPN2 on Sunday from 5:30-7 p.m. ET.

The winner of each event claims a spot on the Team USA for the IAAF World Cup Track and Field Championships, slated for September in Madrid, Spain.
