THE FLATS — The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (8-6, 3-2) defeated No. 44 Duke 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
The win is the second Jackets win of the weekend after they defeated No. 7 North Carolina on Friday night giving the Jackets an 8-1 mark at home.
The Jackets entered singles play leading 1-0 after clinching the doubles point with wins from Andrew Li/Zummy Bauer and Phillip Gresk/Carlos Divar.
Li/Bauer took down Catalin Mateas/Vincent Lin of Duke, 6-1 and Gresk/Divar defeated Nick Stachowiak/Jason Lapidus, 6-3.
In singles, Gresk fell to No. 114 Spencer Furman and Li fell in defeat to Mateas giving the Blue Devils a 2-1 advantage.
Brandon Freestone dropped his match to Lin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, with Divar, Pablo Schelcher, and Chris Yun still playing.
No. 30 Divar defeated No. 41 Stachowiak, 7-5 7-6 (7) and Yun won his match over Sean Sculley, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to tie the match at three apiece.
Schelcher would then outlast Robert Levine, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (11) to seal the win for the Jackets.
The Jackets will be back in action on Friday, March 22nd when they visit the Virginia Cavaliers.
