COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The first-year Georgia Tech women’s swimming and diving team completed its inaugural ACC Championships Saturday, setting several more school records, and placing eighth with 220 points at the University of Maryland’s Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. North Carolina won its third straight title.
Freshman Anna Saum had the Jackets’ top finish of the day, placing sixth in the 200-yard backstroke in a school-record time of 2:02.45. Katie Duffy was 16th in the same event.
Tech also had great success in the 200 butterfly, as both Cara DeVinny and Lisa Hancock earned NCAA “B” cuts in the consolation finals. DeVinny, who placed 10th, lowered her school record to 2:02.22, while Hancock went 2:02.87 to place 11th.
The Jackets’ 400 free relay squad placed sixth in a school record time of 3:28.20.
Other strong swims came from Michelle Maguire, who was 16th in the 1650 freestyle with a school record time of 17:11.66, and Moeko Wallis, who was 16th in the 100 free.
The Tar Heels recorded a total of 686.5 points, 54.5 points ahead of second-place Virginia with 632. Florida State was third with a total of 577 points followed by Clemson (400.5), Maryland (392), NC State (306), Duke (247) and Georgia Tech (220).
Tech’s men’s team will compete in the ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships next weekend, also in College Park. The women return to action on March 2 at the Women’s Last Chance Meet at Auburn, Ala.
