Chattanooga, Tenn. – Georgia Tech’s Zachary Rath defeated Robert Van Swelm of Troy to advance to the Round of 32 at the Icy Hot/ITA Men’s All-American Intercollegiate. Rath will face Max Jones from the University of New Mexico Sunday morning in the Round of 32.
Rath downed Van Swelm in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. For the tournament, Rath is 3-0 in singles action to advance to the Round of 32.
Scott Blackmon was the other Tech competitor in the Round of 64. The freshman from Pensacola, Fla., fell to Florida’s Stefan Tell in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
In doubles action, Rath teamed with freshman George Gvelesiani. After receiving a bye in the first round, the duo matched up against Nihal Advani and Dinko Halachev of Arkansas-Little Rock. Rath and Gvelesiani fell in a close match, 8-6, in the Round of 64.
Blackmon joined fellow freshman David North in doubles action. The two received a bye into the Round of 64. The duo, who made the finals at the Southern Intercollegiate, fell to Drew Eberly and Dennis Mertens of Ohio State by a score of 8-1.
Jose Luis Muguruza is set to begin action on Monday, October 4. Muguruza will participate in singles action and will team with Rajevac for doubles.
