Rajevac, Sallinger and Wieters Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

March 28, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech standouts Marko Rajevac, Jessica Sallinger and Matt Wieters were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, March 28, 2005.

Rajevac, a junior from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, led Georgia Tech to a 2-0 record for the week against No. 38 Arizona State and No. 18 Tulane in Tempe, Ariz. Rajevac was a perfect 4-0 on the week, going 2-0 in both singles and doubles. He teamed with David North at No. 1 doubles and won 8-4 against Arizona State and then upended Tulane’s No. 38 ranked pair of Dmitriy Koch and Alberto Sottocorno, 8-0. At No. 3 singles, he clinched the match for Tech against Arizona State with his 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5) win and later in the week, helped the Yellow Jackets cruise by Tulane with his straight set win.

Sallinger, a senior from Kennesaw, Ga., led the 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 4-0 record last week, including an ACC sweep over No. 24 Florida State, for the first time since the 2000 season. Sallinger, a native of Kennesaw, Ga., began the week on Monday with a complete-game shutout against Stetson, throwing five innings, allowing four hits and struck out four. She then tossed her eighth career no-hitter, 10th shutout of the season, against the 24th-ranked Seminoles on Saturday, striking out 11, and helping Tech snap a nine-game losing streak to FSU. In the nightcap later that afternoon, Sallinger entered the circle for Tech with the bases loaded and one out with the Jackets leading 3-1, and shut the door, striking out both FSU hitters she faced to record her first save of the season. On Sunday, Sallinger again stymied the FSU offensive attack, taking a no-hitter to the seventh inning. With two outs, Sallinger surrendered her first hit in 13 2/3 innings to an FSU hitter, ending the game with a one-hitter, and her fourth consecutive complete-game shutout of the week, 11th of the season. She now has not allowed an earned run in 45 2/3 straight innings and has pitched 28 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. The ACC career strikeout leader moved into eighth place all-time in the NCAA with 1,244 career strikeouts and is currently second in the ACC with 111 career complete games and 98 career wins.

Wieters, a freshman from Goose Creek, S.C., went 10-for-15 (.667) in four games against Auburn and Miami last week, leading the Yellow Jackets to their first series win over the Hurricanes in Coral Gables. The freshman had two home runs and eight RBI, posting a 1.200 slugging percentage and a .706 on base percentage. Wieters led Tech in Sunday’s 11-10 comeback win, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. With the score tied 9-9 in the top of the ninth inning, he hit a two-run homer that gave the Yellow Jackets an 11-9 lead. In the bottom of the inning, he recorded the final three outs of the game to register the save. On Saturday, Wieters had his second 5-hit game of the year, going 5-for-5 with four RBI. Wieters went 2-for-4 with a home run on Wednesday vs. Auburn. For the season, Wieters is hitting .438 with four home runs and 26 RBI, posting a .554 on base percentage and a .675 slugging percentage. In nine ACC games, Wieters is batting .676 (25-for-37) with three home runs and 19 RBI.
