Rabbitt, Gergen & Smith Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

ATLANTA – Cross country standout Kyle Rabbitt, volleyball middle blocker Jayme Gergen, and football wide receiver Jonathan Smith were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, October 13, 2003.

Rabbitt, a junior from Tyrone, Ga., led Tech to a second-place finish at the Auburn University Invitational by winning the meet with an eight-kilometer time of 24:47.87. He was first out of the 259 athletes that finished the race while the Yellow Jackets team was second among 29 teams competing at the meet. The win marked his top finish of the season, as he finished fifth in his only other race of 2003, the Wake Forest Invitational.

Gergen, a junior from Topeka, Kansas, led the Georgia Tech volleyball team to a perfect 2-0 record on the week, as the Jackets defeated Atlantic Coast Conference opponents Wake Forest and Duke by 3-0 marks. She was the Jackets’ top player on the week, averaging 3.33 kills and 1.50 blocks per game and hitting .356. In the match against Duke, she recorded 11 kills and had six block assists. Gergen is currently second on the team in hitting percentage (.405) and blocks per game, with 1.09.

Smith, a senior from Argyle, Ga., led the football team to a 24-7 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference rival Wake Forest by catching seven passes for a total of 194 yards. He had a 65-yard touchdown reception to lead the Jackets to their third straight victory. Smith’s 194 yards was his fourth 100-yard game of the season and the ninth-best single-game total in Georgia Tech history. Over the last two games, he has caught 16 passes for 349 yards (21.8 yards per catch) and two touchdowns. He currently leads the ACC and ranks ninth in the nation in receiving yards per game, with 103.6.
