THE FLATS – Junior Natasha Prokhnevska and freshman Johnnise Renaud of the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the main singles draw at the ITA Southeast Regional after they both defeated players from the University of Georgia.

On day two of the ITA Southeast Regionals that are being held at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex, the Yellow Jackets recorded seven singles wins. Four Yellow Jackets advanced out of the round of 32 in the singles main draw this afternoon while two Jackets made it out of the round of 16 to the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Natasha Prokhnevksa, who is ranked as the #118 singles player, cruised to a 6-0, 6-3, victory against Florida Atlantic’s Catalina Ene. During the round of 16, Prokhnevska took down the number two seed, Georgia’s Silva Garcia. After winning set one, 6-4, Prokhnevska fell, 6-1, to Garcia. The loss in set two didn’t deter Prokhnevska, who came back to win set three, 6-3, and secure her spot in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw.

Freshman Johnnise Renaud, who is the number eight seed of the singles main draw, dropped Miami’s Wendy Zhang, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in a three-set match in the round of 32. Renaud went on to face Georgia’s Hannah King. King recorded a 6-2 win in set one but Renaud followed up with a 6-1 victory in set two. In the deciding set, Renaud came out strong to blank King, 3-0, and advance to the quarterfinals.

Both freshman Paige Hourigan and sophomore Rasheeda McAdoo won against seeded opponents in the round of 32. Hourigan fought back after losing set one, 7-5, to the number 16 seed, Clementina Riobueno of Miami, to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3. Hourigan lost in the round of 16 to the number one seed and #6 ranked player, Lauren Herring of Georgia. Herring defeated Hourigan, 7-5, 6-3.

McAdoo faced number 12 seed Kerrie Cartwright of Florida State. McAdoo defeated Cartwright, who is ranked #91, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).  After her win against Cartwright, McAdoo moved on to face the number five seed, Florida’s Josie Kuhlman. Kuhlman took the match in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman Alexis Prokopuik picked up Georgia Tech’s first win of the day with a 6-3, 6-1, victory in the A singles consolation draw against Stetson’s Ashley Dean in the round of 32. Prokopuik then fell in the round of 16 to #111 Monique Albuquerque of Miami, 6-3, 6-3.

Sophomore Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer also competed in the A singles consolation draw this morning. Anton-Ohlmeyer lost a close first set, 7-6 (5) to #79 Yukako Noi of Florida State. Noi won the second set, 6-3.
