ATHENS, Greece – Incoming Georgia Tech freshman Onur Uras (Turkey) posted a time of 56.37 in the men’s 100-meter butterfly to finish in 49th place in the preliminaries on Thursday morning at the Athens Olympics.
The Istanbul, Turkey, native will join the Tech men’s swimming and diving team next week when he returns from the Summer Olympic Games. American Ian Crocker won the prelim event with a time of 52.03. Joining Crocker in the semifinals for the U.S. team will be Michael Phelps, tallying a time of 52.35 to finish third. The cut line for the semis was 53.11.
Uras concludes the swimming competition for the Yellow Jackets at the Olympics. Junior-to-be Chaunte Howard (U.S.A) will compete in the qualifying rounds of the women’s high jump on Aug. 26 and former men’s track star Angelo Taylor (U.S.A) will compete in the prelims of the men’s 400-meter intermediate hurdles on Aug. 23.
