THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior guard Omoregie Uzzi was named first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference Monday, the league office and the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) announced.
Uzzi is a three-time All-ACC performer. The Lithonia (Ga.) product was a first-team selection in 2011 and a second-team selection as a sophomore in 2010.
Georgia Tech has placed at least one player on the All-ACC first team in each of the last 17 seasons. Equally impressive, the Yellow Jackets have had at least one offensive lineman on the All-ACC first team for five consecutive seasons.
Uzzi is the first Yellow Jacket to earn first-team honors in consecutive years since center Sean Bedford in 2009 and 2010.
Uzzi and the offensive line have helped the Yellow Jacket offense average 323.3 yards rushing per game, which ranks third nationally. Tech averages more than 450 yards of total offense and 36 points per game.
Four Georgia Tech players were named honorable mention All-ACC: junior linebacker Jeremiah Attoachu, junior center Jay Finch, junior offensive lineman Will Jackson and senior running back Orwin Smith. Attaochu leads the Yellow Jackets in tackles for loss (10) and sacks (8). Smith is Tech’s leading rusher (61.2 ypg) while averaging 9.0 yards per rushing attempt.
Georgia Tech will play 13th-ranked Florida State Saturday night in the Dr Pepper ACC Championship Game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The Yellow Jackets are appearing in the ACC title game for the third time, the second time in the last four years under head coach Paul Johnson.
