Nott Leads Tech Men's Tennis At ITA Region II Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by the play of West Nott, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team turned in a perfect day in doubles competition at the ITA Region II Championships qualifying round on Wednesday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Nott teamed with senior Fabio Campos to pick up a win in the first round of the qualifying draw. The duo defeated High Point’s team of Chris Archer and Mike Tolman by an 8-5 score and will face Hampton’s Leonardo Casadei and Valter Paiva in the second round on Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets’ second tandem of Joao Menano and Jason Pieters were also victorious in the first round of doubles action, as they defeated Old Dominion’s team of Patrick Binkowski and Calin Milos in impressive 8-3 fashion. They will now face Duke’s Stephen Amritraj and Ludovic Walter in the second round.

In singles play, Nott was Tech’s lone winner, as he advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins on the day. The junior opened play by defeating Justin Reid in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. He then battled to down Alex Fish in the second round in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Nott will now face Viktor Koczan in the third round on Thursday.

The Jackets’ other singles competitors were unable to advance past the first round, as Campos fell to Sander Koning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, while Jason Pieters was defeated by Valter Paiva in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

The ITA Region II Championship will continue on Thursday with qualifying singles and doubles play, while the main draw of the event will get underway on Friday. The eight quarterfinalists from the qualifying draw will advance into the main draw. Full tournament results are available at www.tennisinformation.com. The tournament code is #2882858.
