ATLANTA – Sophomore Sasha Krupina defeated Claire Bartlett in straight sets to help the sixth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team to a 5-2 win over No. 20 Virginia (10-3, 3-1 ACC) Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
“We are definitely happy to get away with a win today,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “It was nice to see our top three singles players provide a spark and get on board early to put us on top”
The Cavaliers opened the day with an early 1-0 lead on the Yellow Jackets (9-5, 3-1) after sweeping all three doubles matches.
Tech stormed back as No. 7 Irina Falconi, playing in the top singles spot in the lineup, defeated Emily Fraser, 6-0, 6-1. No. 18 Amanda McDowell then earned her fourth victory in her last five singles matches behind a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jennifer Stevens on court two.
Sophomore Noelle Hickey made it three straight-set victories in a row for Tech when she defeated Lindsey Hardenbergh 6-2, 6-4 in the third spot in the lineup.
Krupina would seal the win for the Jackets when she defeated Claire Bartlett, 6-2, 6-4, in the fifth singles flight. Viet Ha Ngo added a fifth singles victory for the Jackets when she outlasted Nella Vaez for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 on court six.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow morning against Virginia Tech. The match at the Bill Moore Tennis Center is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
