No. 6 Yellow Jackets Continue Road Trip Against Wake Forest, NC State

March 27, 2009

ATLANTA – The sixth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will conclude its three-match road trip this weekend when it travels to North Carolina for a Saturday match with Wake Forest and a meeting with NC State Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets (11-5, 4-1 ACC) will face the Demon Deacons Saturday at Leighton Stadium beginning at noon. On Sunday, Tech will head to NC State for a 1 p.m. match at the J.W. Isenour Tennis Center.

“It is good to get back and play some conference matches,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “I feel our young team has handled the toughest schedule in the nation well this season but we still have some difficult matches ahead.”

Wake Forest currently ranks fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with a 3-1 mark in league matches and a 12-4 overall record. No. 51 Sasha Kulikova is Wake’s only ranked singles competitor. She leads the Deacons at No. 1 with a 4-0 conference record.

The Demon Deacons lead the all-time series, 20-8, with the Jackets but Tech has won the last six matches, including the last two in Winston-Salem.

“Wake will certainly present some challenges for us on Saturday,” Shelton said. “We look forward to the challenge and will look to continue to get better.”

The Wolf Pack (4-11, 1-4) dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 7 Duke last Wednesday. Junior Berkeley Brock defeated the 23rd nationally ranked Duke player, Ellah Nze, in a third-set tie-break in the 6-1 loss. Brock and sophomore Lenka Hojckova are currently ranked No. 45, and Hojckova is also ranked 99th in singles play.

The Yellow Jackets have dominated the all-time series with the Pack, winning 13 straight and are 20-12 overall.

Tech will return home next weekend for its final homestand of the regular season when it hosts Boston College on Saturday, April 4 and Maryland on Sunday, April 5.
