ATLANTA – The sixth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will return to action Thursday evening when they travel to Athens, Ga., to face archrival and third-ranked Georgia (12-2). The match at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets (8-4), fresh off an upset win over the No. 4 Notre Dame, have won three straight and have defeated three teams ranked in the top 10 this season. Junior Amanda McDowell has helped spark the Jackets winning streak with three straight singles wins.
“We have another great opportunity in Athens,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “They have a very talented young team as do we. It is going to be a great match and I would like our fans to leave work early and come cheer us on to victory.”
Georgia holds a 17-3 overall record against the Yellow Jackets but Tech has won three of the last five meetings. Last year, the two programs split their two meetings. The Jackets defeated then No. 6 Georgia, 7-0, at the ITA National Team Indoors on their way to a second straight title. Two weeks later, the Bulldogs defeated Tech, 4-3, in Atlanta.
The match will feature two of the nation’s top freshmen in Tech’s seventh-ranked Irina Falconi and the Bulldogs Chelsey Gullickson, who is ranked ninth in the nation. Falconi has registered a 7-5 record this season playing in the top two positions for the Jackets.
Tech will return home this weekend when it continues Atlantic Coast Conference play against No. 20 Virginia Saturday at noon and Virginia Tech Sunday at 11 a.m.
