STANFORD, Calif. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team, ranked sixth in the nation and seeded sixth in the 2006 NCAA Championships, fell 4-0 to ninth-ranked and 11th-seeded Northwestern Thursday morning at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets finished the season 23-6, while the Wildcats advanced to a Round of Eight match with VCU.
“I’m disappointed, to say the least,” said Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “We had lofty goals for this tournament. You have to give credit to Northwestern though, because they played well and really executed today.
Northwestern took a 1-0 lead with 8-4 wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles position after the Tech duo of Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio downed Nazlie Ghazal and Jamie Peisel, 8-2, on court three.
Following doubles play, the Jackets earned first-set wins on courts one, five and six, but couldn’t pull out a singles victory, as 11th-ranked Cristelle Grier won a 6-4, 6-3 match over No. 63 Lyndsay Shosho on the second court, and 35th-ranked Alexis Prousis defeated Tech’s 65th-ranked Silverio, 7-6 (4), 6-1 on court three.
Northwestern finished off the 4-0 win as Peisel stopped the Jackets’ 96th-ranked Tarryn Rudman, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 4 singles slot.
