No. 40 Men's Tennis Upsets #29 Florida State

April 4, 2004

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team took five singles matches to defeat Florida State Sunday afternoon, 5-2. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 13-6, 5-3 ACC while the Seminoles drop to 10-9, 3-4 ACC.

“This was a great way for us to close out the ACC portion of our season,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “This is the first match this season that we’ve won after dropping the doubles point and it was great to see our guys fight so well in singles. The conditions were tough with the wind, but at every match in singles, our guys hung in there and played well.”

Tech began the match dropping two of three doubles matches, as the combination of No. 41 Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond paired together to upset No. 11 Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, West Nott and Jason Pieters fell to Matt Cloer and Jonathas Sucupira, 8-4. The Jackets did manage to win at No. 3 doubles as Joao Menano and Jose Luis Muguruza teamed to beat Chip Webb and Joe Bassett, 9-7.

The momentum turned in the singles matches, as the Jackets picked up wins in five out of the six flights. #100 Muguruza tied the match at 1-1 as he upset #51 Sucupira, 6-2, Retired at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Pieters posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Westerhof giving the Jackets a 2-1 lead. Tech then took a 3-1 lead as Nott fought back to defeat Groslimond, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. The Jackets clinched the match at No. 5 singles as Zachary Rath posted a come-from-behind win over Webb, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, Menano held on for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win over Joao Paolo Bounassar. The Seminoles lone victory in singles was at No. 1 as #19 Cloer came back to defeat #65 Schnugg, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action at South Carolina in Columbia, SC, next Thursday in a match scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
