Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia won the doubles point and secured straight-set wins in the first four singles matches, rolling to a 7-0 victory over Georgia Tech in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis match Friday at the Boars Head Sports Club.
Tech (11-9, 3-6 ACC) lost its fifth straight conference match, while the Cavaliers (17-3, 9-0) remained undefeated in ACC play and in first place.
Virginia captured 8-5 victories on courts 1 and 2 to take the doubles point, with its fourth-ranked team of Luca Cotinteli and Ryan Shane taking down Christopher Eubanks and Michael Kay, and J.C. Aragone and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski overcoming Tech’s 67th-ranked pairing of Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura.
The Cavaliers had little trouble finishing off the Jackets after that. Kwiatkowski, ranked 14th in the nation, didn’t lose a game in defeating Cole Fiegel at No. 4, then Aragone downed Segura at No. 5, and Henrik Wiershom defeated Elijah Melendez at No. 6 to secure the match. Shane, ranked No. 3 nationally, defeated Michael Kay, 6-2, 6-4, on court 3 to make it 5-0.
Eubanks, ranked 54th in singles, and Benito took their opponents to the third set on courts 1 and 2, but were unable to finish. Mitchell Frank, ranked 22nd in the nation, outlasted Eubanks in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, on court 1, while No. 72 Collin Altamirano defeated Benito on court 2, 7-5, 0-6, 7-5.
Tech finishes off the weekend with a match at No. 12 Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon.
