THE FLATS –

Carlos Benito completed a three-set victory on court 2 singles, but NC State, ranked 34th in the nation, cruised past Tech, 6-1, in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

Tech, unable to rebound after Friday night’s loss against 12th ranked Wake Forest, fell to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in the ACC.  NC State improved to 13-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Benito, a sophomore from Madrid, Spain, collected the Yellow Jackets only point after defeating the Wolfpack’s Simon Norenius in three sets, 7-6, (7-5), 2-6, 6-2.  He improved to 13-3 in dual matches this spring.

NC State started off the day by taking the doubles point with 8-5 victories on courts 2 and 3.  Thomas Weigel and Ian Dempster defeated Nathan Rakitt and Cole Fiegel on court 3. After  Tech’s pairing of Christopher Eubanks and Michael Kay responded by winning in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4), over Beck Bond and Nick Horton on court 1, the Wolfpack claimed the doubles point after Robbie Mudge and Simon Norenius downed Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura, 8-5, on court 2.

In singles play, five of the six matches went to third sets, but only Benito was able to prevail for the Yellow Jackets.  #85 Austin Powell earned the only straight-set win, defeating Nathan Rakitt, 6-3, 6-2 on court 3.  #60 Robbie Mudge followed with a victory over #73 Christopher Eubanks, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, on court 1.  Thomas Weigel scored the clinching point with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Cole Fiegel.

Freshman Michael Kay fell to Beck Bond, 6-7, 6-4, 4-6, on court 4, and senior Eduardo Segura dropped a three-set match to Nick Horton, 6-2, 4-6, 5-7, on court 6.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Friday, April 10, when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to face No. 4 Virginia.
