No. 34 Men's Tennis Slams Furman, 6-1

March 20, 2004

ATLANTA – Scott Schnugg was a perfect 2-0 as Georgia Tech defeated Furman at the Bill Moore Tennis Center this afternoon. The No. 15 tandem of Schnugg and Marko Rajevac clinched the doubles point for the Yellow Jackets with their 8-1 win. Then in singles play, Schnugg clinched the overall match with his win over John Chesworth, 7-6 (6), 6-2 in No. 1 singles.

The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team took the court this afternoon as part of a double header with the women’s team. Following a 6-1 win by the Jackets in women’s play over Furman, the men settled in for much of the same.

In doubles, the Jackets swept all three matches against the Paladins with Shnuggy and Rajevac clinching the doubles point. In singles play, Rajevac was the first of five Yellow Jackets to post a win with his 6-0, 6-1 performance at the No. 6 slot. Following Rajevac, West Nott won in straight sets, setting up Schnugg for the deciding match. The Jackets finished the day taking all three doubles matches and 5-of-6 in singles play. The lone loss came at the No. 2 spot where Jose Muguruza fell 2-6, 5-7.

“I was pleased with the way everyone played today,” head coach Kenny Thorne commented. “Coming off of a tough loss, they knew they needed to come in and get everybody on the right track. It started with good doubles. Very good doubles. We have a lot of tough matches coming up so we needed to get a solid win under our belt, which we did.”
