The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team will open its 2006 dual-match season by hosting Furman (1-4) at the Bill Moore Tennis Center Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets enter the 2006 season ranked 29th in the nation after going 14-8 in 2005. Individually, the doubles team of Marko Rajevac and David North is ranked No. 22 after earning All-American honors during the 2005 campaign. In the fall, the duo posted a 8-3 record, including capturing the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA Consolation title.
“Furman is a great match for our team to begin the season against,” said head coach Kenny Thorne, who is 7-1 in season openers. “They have a great coach in Paul Scarpa and have already played a number of matches, so they are used to the dual match format, whereas it has been some time for our guys. I think more than anything, our guys are ready to play against some new opponents. We got a good start on the year by playing against some great competition in Mexico and hopefully we’ll get started off on the right track Wednesday.”
This year’s team enters the dual match season led by senior Marko Rajevac and junior Zachary Rath. along with sophomores Scott Blackmon, Jordan Delass, George Gvelesiani, and David North.
“We have a very small and young team,” Thorne added. “This will be a good indicator of who is ready to step into some tough positions we are going to have this year. I think over the first two or three matches, we will find out who is going to step up for us this year.”
