ATLANTA – The No. 27 Georgia Tech men’s track and field team will split its roster up and travel to three separate meets this weekend. The Yellow Jackets will compete at the Iowa State Classic, the Tiger Invitational and the Tyson Invitational from Friday-Saturday.
The men’s squad is sending three Jackets to the Tyson Invitational at the Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., 11 to the Iowa St. Classic in Ames, Iowa and 12 to the Tiger Invitational in Clemson, S.C.
“This being our last weekend of competition prior to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, we have split our team and will send them out to three locations,” head coach Grover Hinsdale said. “This will provide them with a facility that offers the best opportunity for success in their event. We were elated with what we accomplished in Blacksburg last weekend. I am very pleased with how this team is coming together.”
The men’s team is led by senior James Lemons II, who has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in both the triple jump and long jump. Lemons is currently ranked fourth in the nation in the triple jump and 10th in the long jump. Sophomore Alphonso Jordan is ranked fifth in the nation in the triple jump after his NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark of 52 feet, 4 ½ inches at last weekends VT Elite meet.
Senior Derek Hoye provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run two weeks ago, as did junior Andy Powlen, who tossed the shot put a career-best 58 feet, 3 ¼ inches.
Live stats for the meets will be available on www.ramblinwreck.com, Georgia Tech’s official athletic website. Results for all three meets will be posted at the end of each day.
