Jaime Wong, Kelly Anderson, Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho each won singles matches and the Jackets won the doubles point as the No. 26 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (10-2) defeated No. 36 Minnesota (8-5) by a 5-2 score Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
The Jackets took the first point of the match with wins at all three doubles positions. The 54th ranked tandem of Wong and Anderson teamed to defeat Amy Thomas and Valerie Vladea by a score of 9-8 (2). Catherine Gunn and Sekita Grant played at the No. 2 position, winning against Angela Buergis and Nischela Reddy and won 8-5, while Morris and Shosho teamed at the No. 3 position to win by an 8-5 score.
Wong met Vladea at the No. 2 singles spot and dropped the first set 6-4 before rebounding with a tiebreaker win in the second. The two then played a tiebreaker for the third set, with Wong winning, 12-10.
At the No. 3 position, Anderson faced Michaela Havelkova and won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Morris dropped the first set to Reddy at the No. 5 position, 6-3, but fought back to win the next two sets and the match, 6-2, 6-0. The final winner of the afternoon was Shosho who posted a 7-6 (0), 6-1 win over Brandi Watts in the No. 6 singles slot.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Friday when they will travel to take on conference opponent Virginia at 2 p.m.
