Clemson, S.C. – Freshman Nathan Rakitt scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Gerardo Meza for Georgia Tech’s only point Friday, and No. 24 Clemson defeated the Yellow Jackets, 4-1, at the Sloan Tennis Center.
The Tigers improved to 17-5 overall and 6-3 in the ACC, accumulating six conference wins for the first time since 2007, while Tech fell to 8-15 and 1-9 in ACC play in its final regular-season match. The ACC Championship begins next Thursday in Cary, N.C.
Friday’s match was moved indoors due to inclement weather, and Clemson secured the doubles point when 15th-ranked Dominique Maden and Yannick Maden defeated 8th-ranked Juan Spir and Vikram Hundal, 8-5, and the top position. It was the first match together for Spir and Hundal since Hundal injured his knee on Feb. 28 and missed the next 10 matches. Rakitt and Juan Melian won 8-6 over Ayrton Wibowo and Zachary Rigsby at No. 2.
Rakitt tied the match for Tech with his win over Meza on court 3, his 22nd victory of the year, but the Tigers took control of the match with wins at the top two positions. Yannick Maden, ranked 24th, ended a six-match winning streak for Tech’s Spir, ranked 45th, with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 1, while Hunter Harrington outlasted Melian at No. 2, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Rigsby earned the clinching point for the Tigers by defeating Eduardo Segura by a score of 7-5, 6-1 on court 5. The remaining matches went unfinished.
