ATLANTA – The 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will look to avenge a regular-season loss at the hands of Clemson when the two school meet in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in Raleigh, N.C. The event will be contested at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center on April 18-21.
The Yellow Jackets (13-8, 3-5 ACC) are the fifth-seeded team in the event and will face the fourth-seeded Tigers (13-9, 5-3 ACC) in the quarterfinals beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Clemson claimed a 4-3 win on April 4 when the teams last met during the regular season, with the Tigers’ win in the doubles portion of the match proving to be the difference.
Tech’s individuals will continue to be led by junior Jaime Wong and freshman Catherine Gunn, both of whom are ranked in the latest ITA poll, with Wong being ranked 59th and Gunn checking in at 67th. Gunn has the top overall record on the team as a rookie, posting a 24-7 overall record and a 17-3 mark in dual-match play. Wong is right behind Gunn with her overall record of 20-12 and a dual-match mark of 11-7. Wong has played well of late, winning three of her last four singles outings.
The winner of the match-up between the Jackets and Tigers will advance to face the winner of the match between top-seeded Duke and ninth-seeded NC State in the semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Full tournament information and results are available at www.theacc.com.
