THE FLATS – No. 21 Georgia Tech volleyball (7-1) wrapped up the Georgia Tech Classic without a blemish after topping Oklahoma, 3-1, on Sunday in O’Keefe Gymnasium. Junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann led the Jackets through the match with a season-high 22 kills, 13 digs and three total blocks. The decorated veteran piled up her kills with a notable .378 hitting percentage on the way to her sixth double double of the season.

The Yellow Jackets outmatched the Sooners (4-5) in most major statistical categories, holding the advantage in kills (55-48), hitting percentage (.302-.145), assists (49-45), digs (52-39) and blocks (12-8). In doing so, Georgia Tech finished a perfect 3-0 in its annual tournament to claim 26 of its last 28 matches on The Flats.

Reinforcing Bergmann on the attack were the remaining two “Killer B’s” in senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla and freshman outside hitter Bianca Bertolino. Brambilla picked up her fourth double double on the year by way of 10 kills and 13 digs while Bertolino added 10 kills of her own along with nine digs and a career-high three solo blocks.

Senior setter Matti McKissock pulled the strings offensively once again as she tallied 42 assists, nearing her next milestone of moving to seventh in all-time assists in Georgia Tech history.

Senior middle blocker Breland Morrissette anchored the Yellow Jacket defense in the middle, finishing with five total blocks (two solo, three assisted).

How it Happened

The Jackets and Sooners found themselves in a battle in the first set, requiring extra points to declare a winner. Oklahoma got off to quick start leading 7-3 early, but Georgia Tech rattled off five straight points to take an 8-7 lead. The two squads were then knotted five times up to a 12 all tally before a burst from Oklahoma put the Sooners up, 17-13. The Jackets remained within striking distance until putting together a stretch taking five of six points, resulting in a deadlock at 23. The two sides would tie three more times before Tech reached set point leading 27-26, but Oklahoma took the next three points for a 29-27 first set win.

Georgia Tech retaliated in the second set, using a four-point run to jump out to a 6-3 lead. Shortly after, the Jackets took another five of the next six points to more than double the Sooners, leading 11-5. Oklahoma would manage to draw within four at an 18-14 Tech lead, but the Jackets then closed the second set with a seven-point run, capped by an ace courtesy of McKissock, for a 25-14 set win.

Set three began neck-and-neck, but a five-point Georgia Tech run broke the set open giving the Yellow Jackets a 17-10 lead. Another four straight points for the White and Gold shortly after increased Tech’s lead to double digits at 21-11, putting the set out of reach for the Sooners and priming a 25-18 third set win for the home squad.

Despite momentum shifting in favor of the Jackets, the Sooners didn’t go down without a fight. As the fourth set went back and forth, neither side was able to create significant separation up to a 21 all tally. From there, Georgia Tech took control, claiming four of the next five points for a 25-22 fourth set win and 3-1 match win.
