No. 2 Yellow Jackets Sweep Virginia, 7-0

ATLANTA – Whitney McCray dropped just four games en route to a straight-set singles win after teaming with Noelle Hickey to clinch the doubles point as No. 2 Georgia Tech (15-4, 7-1 ACC) downed No. 40 Virginia (9-9, 5-3 ACC), 7-0, Saturday afternoon on the indoor courts at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

McCray and Hickey stopped Virginia’s Lindsey Pereira and Lara Alexander, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles after the No. 3 Tech tandem of Amanda McDowell and Kirsten Flower dropped Hampton Williams and Cathy Nimitz, 8-2. Tech’s Kristi Miller and Sasha Krupina then finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Amanda Rales and Jennifer Stevens at the top doubles spot.

McCray gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 edge when she breezed to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Pereira at No. 3 singles, and Miller pushed the score to 3-0 by stopping Rales, 6-1, 6-4, at the top singles spot.

McDowell clinched match point for Tech by pulling out a 7-3 victory in a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Stevens, 6-2, 7-6 (3), and Flower made quick work of Alexander at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win to push the score to 5-0 in Tech’s favor.

Maya Johansson and Christy Striplin then finished off the sweep for the Jackets as Johansson dropped Williams, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles and Striplin defeated Maggie Yahner, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 4 spot.

The Jackets will return to action Sunday when they host Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. in what will be the first match of a women’s/men’s doubleheader at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
