No. 17 Tech Women's Tennis To Close Out Home Schedule Against Clemson

April 3, 2002

ATLANTA – The 17th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will play its final home match of the 2001-02 season on Thursday afternoon when it hosts 44th-ranked Clemson at the Bill Moore Tennis Center beginning at 2 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets (13-6, 3-3 ACC) have won two straight matches in conference play after dropping three of their first four ACC contests. Tech swept Virginia (5-1) and Maryland (5-2) last weekend at home to even its conference mark to stand in fifth place in the latest ACC standings. Tech’s No. 17 ranking is one up from last week and is the highest ranking that the program has attained in its history.

A trio of players have been the catalyst s for the Jackets of late as freshman Catherine Gunn, sophomore Sekita Grant and senior Laura Ozolins boast winning percentages over 60 percent in six previous conference matches. Both Grant and Gunn sport matching 5-1 marks in ACC play, with Gunn leading all Tech players with a dual-match record of 16-2 and a 23-6 record overall. Her 23 wins are tied for the ninth most in a single season by a Tech player, as she has matched Kim Lash’s total during the 1984 campaign.

Grant has won four straight singles matches, dating back to the Jackets’ match at Duke where she was one of two singles winners for Tech. On the year, Grant holds a dual-match singles record of 13-6, which is the second-most dual-match wins by a Yellow Jacket player this year. Ozolins captured both of her matches last weekend against Virginia and Maryland and currently is third on the team in total singles wins in 2002 with 18.

Following its match with the Tigers on Thursday, the Yellow Jackets will wrap up the regular season with a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., to face Florida State on Saturday, beginning at noon. Tech will look to match the school record for conference wins with four against Clemson.
