No. 13 Jackets Begin Spring Break with 4-3 Win at No. 57 Texas A&M

March 21, 2006

College Station, Tex. – Senior Kelly Anderson dropped just two games en route to a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles to help 13th-ranked Georgia Tech (12-2) to a 4-3 victory against No. 57 Texas A&M (5-8) Tuesday night at the Georgia P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

The Aggies carried a 1-0 lead into singles play by earning wins at the top two doubles positions to begin the night. After the Jackets’ duo of Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio recorded an easy 8-1 victory at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, Texas A&M’s 35th-ranked pair of Nicki Mechem and Anna Lubinsky downed Kelly Anderson and Whitney McCray, 8-5, at the No. 2 position, and Sarah Foster and Tiffany Clifford stopped Tech’s 12th-ranked duo of Kristi Miller and Lyndsay Shosho, 8-6, at the top doubles slot to clinch the point.

Tech then won the first four completed singles matches to earn its 12th victory for the dual-match season.

No. 76 Anderson tied the match at 1-1 with a quick, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Clifford at the No. 5 singles slot before the Jackets’ top-ranked Miller gave Tech a 2-1 match lead with a 6-0, 6-4 win against the Aggies’ 47th-ranked Lubinsky atop the singles lineup.

Tech’s 51st-ranked Shosho came back after falling behind in the second set to win, 6-1, 7-5 over No. 119 Foster in the No. 2 slot, giving Tech a 3-1 edge and rookie Christy Striplin recorded the deciding point in the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Marissa Druss at No. 6 singles.

The Yellow Jackets will continue their spring break swing of Texas in Waco Thursday when they face the 11th-ranked Baylor Bears at 3 p.m. EST.
