ATLANTA – Georgia Tech sophomore Irina Falconi will open the NCAA Singles Tournament Wednesday as the No. 1 seed and will face Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt in the first round at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex beginning at 12:30 p.m.
“I am very thrilled to get a chance to play in another tournament and to go out and play some more tennis,” Falconi said. “Knowing my family will be there will be exciting for me personally. Also, playing doubles with Sasha [Krupina] will be a lot of fun. Overall, it will be a great experience.”
Falconi, who has been ranked No. 1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll all spring, has won 20 straight matches and has a 37-2 overall singles record. She finished the dual-match season with a 26-1 mark and was 10-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. She was named the ACC Player of the Year and the 2010 ACC Tournament MVP.
Wu is currently ranked No. 32 and finished the season with a 23-6 overall record. Playing mostly in the No. 2 spot in the lineup, Wu was 5-1 against Southeastern Conference opponents.
The winner of the first round match will face either California’s Marina Cossou or Samantha Murray of Northwestern Thursday.
In the doubles draw, Falconi and Sasha Krupina will take on second-seeded Hilary Barte and Lindsey Burdette of Stanford Thursday. Times for the doubles draw will be announced later.
