ATLANTA – Maria Nieto went 1-1 in singles play as the Yellow Jackets women’s tennis team continued competition on day two of the 2003 June Stewart Fall Invitational, which is being hosted by Vanderbilt at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. The tournament features players from Tech, Arizona State, Middle Tennessee State, Ole Miss and host Vanderbilt.
Nieto earned her win against Middle Tennessee State’s Ana Maria Cibils in her first match of the day by a 6-2, 6-1 score, but dropped her second match to Vanderbilt’s Helene Stephens by a 6-0, 7-5 count. She has now gone 2-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play in the tournament. Nieto will compete against Tomatis of Ole Miss to conclude singles play on Sunday afternoon and will team with Lyndsay Shosho in doubles against the Rebels’ Basile and Karem Harboe at 9:30 a.m.
Kelly Anderson, Sekita Grant, and Shosho also earned wins in singles on Saturday. Anderson defeated Harboe in her first match of the day by a 7-5, 7-5 score. Both Grant and Shosho had to go three sets in their matches to earn wins, however, with Grant defeating Ole Miss’ Sabrina Capannalo, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and Shosho downing the Rebels’ Sabrina Peppl, 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-5.
Anderson, Grant, and Nieto have all earned two single wins in the tournament while Shosho and Alison Silverio have earned one win apiece.
The tournament is being played in round robin format. The Yellow Jackets will conclude play tomorrow with one singles match per player and one doubles match per team.
