ATLANTA – Allie Niekamp, a senior setter from Findlay, Ohio, has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday morning.
“Allie has always been a hard worker on the court and in the classroom,” said Georgia Tech head coach Bond Shymansky. “She is a perfectionist, so she expects nothing less than A’s and gives an incredible amount of time, energy and focus to performing well academically. Every coach’s dream is to have a smart setter, and she shows her intelligence every day in her academic performance.”
Niekamp holds a 3.31 GPA as a management major at Georgia Tech and is competing in her final season for the Yellow Jacket volleyball team. The three-year starter is one of just five players in school history to eclipse 3,000 assists in a career and currently stands fourth in the school record books with 3,286 assists from 2005-08.
Niekamp ranks fourth in the ACC with 0.38 assists per set in 2008 and sixth with 10.10 assists per set, and ranks among the top-100 in the nation in both categories. She runs an offense that leads the league in assists (13.10) and kills (13.98) per set and stands among the top-25 in the nation in both categories.
This is the first Academic All-District honor of Niekamp’s career after being named to the Academic All-ACC Volleyball team in 2006 and 2007 as well as a three-year member of the ACC Honor Roll.
