Nicole Fegans Wins 3000m ACC Title

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Georgia Tech track & field finished the final day of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Nicole Fegans won the 3000m ACC title with a time of 9:01.31. Fegans led for the first half of the race before falling behind the leader. The led to her having a more powerful kick during the final 400m, eventually winning the race by 2.87 seconds. Fegans broke a new school record, set a facility record and earned All-ACC first team honors with this time.

“We had some great individual efforts from the women that have led our team all season long. I can’t say enough about Nicole, Shanty, Taylor, and Olivia. Nicole winning, while smashing her own school and setting the facility record, was outstanding. Shanty has been consistent all year and had some great attempts at the bar that eventually won. Taylor has been dealing with injuries, yet lined up in each round and gave it her all. And Olivia has gotten on stronger poles every meet and had her best jump of the season,” Women’s Head Coach Alan Drosky said.

“The DMR team, broke a school record that stood for twenty-two years, a record that Coach Megesi anchored. And Sheleah Harris set a personal best while narrowly missing the final of the 60m.”

“As a team, we competed hard for an 11th place finish, but just lack the depth we need to compete at the level we want to be at. Now, we wait to see if we advance any individuals to the upcoming NCAA’s, while also turning our focus to the outdoor season.”

Three more Tech athletes earned All-ACC honors on the day. After qualifying in prelims on Friday, Zach Jaeger and Taylor Grimes competed in the finals of their respective events. Grimes finished fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.39), good for fifth place. Jaeger finished sixth in the mile with a time of 4:07.68, good for sixth places. Both results earned Grimes and Jaeger All-ACC second team honors.

The final Yellow Jacket to earn All-ACC honors on the day was John Watkins who leapt to a new personal best in the triple jump (15.81m, 51’10 ½”) en route to a fifth-place finish and All-ACC second team honors.

“Across the board, we did not have a great ACC Championship. We were not 100% healthy coming in. However, we had some outstanding individual efforts of which I am very proud,” Men’s Head Coach Grover Hinsdale said. “I told the guy it’s time to get healthy, re-set, and get prepared for the second weekend of May when we have a chance to do it all over again.”

The White and Gold will return to action at the NCAA Championships on March 11th.
