Athens, Ga. –

Miguel Muguruza and Dusan Miljevic completed undefeated runs with singles wins, and Georgia Tech’s men’s tennis team won five of seven singles matches Sunday to finish off a successful weekend at the Bulldog Scramble.

Muguruza, a junior from Wesley Chapel, Fla., took a straight set match from Georgia’s Will Reynolds, 6-1, 6-2, while Miljevic, a sophomore from Novi Sad, Serbia, defeated Vanderbilt’s Alex DiValerio in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Both players finished the weekend 4-0.

Also winning for Tech Sunday were junior Ryan Smith, who defeated Georgia’s Drake Bernstein in three sets to finish off a 3-0 weekend; senior Austin Roebuck, who downed Georgia’s Alex Hill in straight sets; and freshman Magin Ortiga, who outlasted Clemson’s Robert Pietrucha in three sets.

“We had a good day again,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “Overall, it was a very good tournament for the guys. I feel like we have some good success to build on going forward. We had quite a few guys step up this week in singles. Hopefully, we can take some of this momentum with us into the ITA regionals in two weeks. I’m very proud of our team right now.”

On the weekend, Tech went 21-7 overall in singles and 7-5 in doubles in the round-robin format. The Jackets won eight of 11 singles matches against Georgia, seven of 11 against Vanderbilt and all six matches they played against Clemson.

Gomez Withdraws from ITA All-American Championship

Tech junior Guillermo Gomez removed himself from the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championship Saturday due to a lingering abdominal injury that began to affect him during matches he played Friday. Gomez, the nation’s No. 5-ranked player, had lost in the first round of the main draw and had won three matches in the consolation draw, but the injury forced him to withdraw before the quarterfinals.
