THE FLATS – Distance runner Nicole Fegans & jumper Bria Matthews find themselves back in the national spotlight this week as the duo is set to take on NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., from June 9-12. Fegans will lace it up for the the women’s 5K final, while Matthews will face two events in the women’s triple jump & long jump finals.

Both student-athletes qualified through competition at NCAA East Regional Preliminaries held May 26-29 in Jacksonville, Fl. To view results from the East Prelims, click here. The complete list of participants for this year’s finals is available here.

Matthews opens the national meet up at 8 p.m. (EST) on Thursday for the long jump finals. Saturday at 6:20 p.m. (EST) Matthews will be back in action for the triple jump finals, with Fegans toeing the line for the 5K finals at approx. 7:55 p.m. (EST). The entirety of the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor National Championships will be streamed live on ESPN3.

According to the final NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List Matthews is ranked No. 12 (6.58m/21′ 7.25″) in the long jump and No. 9 (13.61m/44′ 8″) in the triple jump. Fegans owns the No. 14 mark in the nation in the women’s 5K at 15:37.16.

Hayward Field will have a capacity of 4,400 fans per day for the 2021 DI men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships. Fans attending must wear face coverings. There will be sections available for fully-vaccinated spectators, who must show proof of vaccination. There will also be socially distanced sections for non-vaccinated spectators.

This is the fifth season Matthews has reached finals for NCAA Championships, as well as the second year she has qualified during the outdoor season. Fegans will be racing at outdoor national finals for the first time in her collegiate career. Matthews was named as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Women’s Field MVP for the 2021 outdoor season, scoring the most points by any female field athlete at conference championships, securing two silver medals in the long & triple jump events in the process. Fegans was crowned as the ACC’s Women’s 10K champion and was an all-American during the indoor and cross country seasons this year. In late April Matthews broke the school outdoor record in the long jump, while Fegans set new outdoor school records in the 10K, 1500m and 5K in 2021.

Combining the three events the duo will participate in this week marks a total of 109 times that a Georgia Tech women’s track & field athlete has qualified for national finals in their respective events since Alan Drosky took over as women’s head track & field coach in 1996. Matthews has been named as an all-American four times at national finals, but has yet to earn the title at outdoor championships. Fegans was named a 2020 indoor, 2020 cross country and 2021 indoor all-American, but also has yet to garner the award during the outdoor season.
