ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will continue the 2008 indoor season Fri.- Sat. at the Rod McCravy Invitational in the Nutter Field House on the University of Kentucky campus.
Competition begins Friday at 6 p.m. ET with the women’s weight throw, pole vault and triple jump and continues Saturday morning with the women’s high jump, long jump and shot put at 10:30 a.m. ET.
“The McCravy Invitational will present a great opportunity for this team,” men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale said. “The competition will be outstanding and I look for our guy’s to put up some great numbers. This is as close to a “full strength” team as we have traveled with thus far. I believe we are ready for a great weekend.”
“After an off week, the women are looking forward to competing at the McCravy Invitational,” women’s head coach Alan Drosky added. “The competition will be amongst the best we have faced this season and will help us continue in our preparation for the championship meets later in the season.”
Along with Tech, other teams participating at the event include: Alabama (men only), Eastern Kentucky, Florida, Georgia State (women only), Kentucky, Louisville, Miami (OH), Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi State (women only), Ohio State (men only), Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas Christian, Texas A&M and Western Kentucky.
The Yellow Jackets have had a successful first month to their season as two members of the No. 17 women’s team have automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 60-meter hurdles. Fatmata Fofanah ranks first in the nation in the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.04. Defending NCAA champion in the hurdles event, Shantia Moss, is ranked fourth with a time of 8.11.
“We’re looking for improvement every week with the women focusing on their own individual events while also supporting their teammates throughout the competition,” Drosky said.
The No. 26 men’s squad is led by senior James Lemons II, who ranks third in the nation with a personal-best mark of 52 feet, 8 ¼ inches in the triple jump. Sophomore Alphonso Jordan has a best mark of 51 feet, 6 inches to place him ninth in the nation in the triple jump.
