Georgia Tech senior football standout Jeremy Muyres is the recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Jim Tatum Award, signifying the top senior student-athlete among the league’s football players.
The Tatum Award is given annually in memory of the late Jim Tatum, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year who coached in the 1950’s at both Maryland and North Carolina and believed strongly in the concept of the student-athlete.
Muyres is a three-time all-ACC free safety, including first-team accolades in 2002, as well as a two-time member of the academic all-ACC football team. This fall, he was named to the Verizon Academic All-District III football team and is eligible for the Verizon Academic All-America team.
A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., majoring in management, Muyres maintains a 3.33 grade point average. He is a two-year member of the Yellow Jackets’ Student-Athlete Advisory Board and the recipient of Tech’s Bobby Dodd Scholarship as the Institute’s top male scholar-athlete.
Muyres is third in the ACC and 23rd nationally with five interceptions this season, giving him 12 for his career, which ranks seventh in Tech history. He stands second in Rambling Wreck annals in career tackles by a defensive back with 256.
He is the quarterback of a Tech defense that ranks 11th in the nation, allowing just 16.9 points per game. The Yellow Jackets, who conclude the regular season Saturday at fifth-ranked Georgia (3:30 p.m., CBS-TV), also rank second in the ACC in total defense, rushing defense and pass efficiency defense.
