Muguruza, Ortiga Come up Big in Bulldog Scramble

Athens, Ga. – Miguel Muguruza and Magin Ortiga each won two matches Friday, while Georgia Tech won eight of 13 singles matches and lost two of three doubles matches on the first day of the Bulldog Scramble tennis tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

In the round-robin format, the Yellow Jackets will face players from Georgia, Georgia State and North Carolina in singles and doubles sessions throughout the weekend.

Muguruza, a senior from Wesley Chapel, Fla., defeated a pair of Georgia players, downing Garrett Brasseaux in three sets, taking the third in a tiebreaker, then getting by Will Oliver in three sets. Ortiga, a sophomore from Cartagina, Colombia, beat North Carolina’s Zach Hunter and Georgia’s Campbell Johnson in straight sets.

Eliot Potvin, Dean O’Brien and Dusan Miljevic each split their two singles matches Friday. O’Brien earned his win over Georgia State’s Vincent Verpeaux in straight sets after dropping a straight-set contest to Georgia’s Sadio Doumbia. Potvin, ranked No. 80 in the nation, beat Georgia State’s Victor Valente in straight sets, then dropped a straight-set tilt to No. 14 Javier Garrapiz. Miljevic beat Georgia’s Johnson in three sets, then lost to the Bulldogs’ Hernus Pieters in straight sets.

Senior Ryan Smith prevailed in his only match Friday, beating Georgia State’s Gabe Townes, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles action, Miljevic and Smith earned the Yellow Jackets’ only win in three tries, 8-5 over Georgia State’s Valente and Thomas Cook, 8-5.

Play continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
