Sophomore Omar Morrison and freshmen Terri Ann Grant and Bianca Stewart all posted second-place finishes to lead the Georgia Tech track & field teams on the final day of competition at the Clemson Tiger Invitational in Clemson, S.C. The Yellow Jackets concluded competition at three different meets this weekend in preparation for the 2009 ACC Indoor Championships.
Morrison, who posted the best mark in the triple jump prelims with a 14.69, landed a 14.47 distance in the finals to lock up the runner up finish.
Grant and Stewart sought competition out of each other, both finishing in a tie for second in the women’s high jump posting a 1.73 mark. Their mark was just .05 meters short of an NCAA provisional qualifying height, and a career high for both. Junior Tiffany Chavis finished in fourth with a clearance of 1.68.
It was a good day for all freshmen jumpers, as first-year jumper Jhanelle McLeod placed third in the women’s triple jump with a 12.10 mark, and Mykhail Chambers finished fourth in the men’s high jump with a personal-best 2.09.
Junior Steve Marcelle, who was in competition at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, placed fifth in the men’s shot put, with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 59-02.75.
Both men’s and women’s team will take a week off from competition before heading to the 2009 ACC Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-28, in Blacksburg, Va.
