More Than 43 Percent Of Tech Student-Athletes Make Spring Dean's List

June 1, 2001

ATLANTA – More than 43 percent of Georgia Tech’s student-athletes, 152 of 351, made the Georgia Tech Dean’s List for the spring semester, according to figures released by Dr. Carole Moore, Tech’s director of academic services.

Seventeen of those student-athletes earned Faculty Honors, signifying a 4.0 grade-point average for the semester. Those include outfielder Brad Stockton of the baseball team and defensive back Jeremy Muyres of the football team, as well as football player Hal Higgins, golfer Chip Brown, swimmers Richard Lau and Leo Salinas, tennis player Laura Ozolins, track team members Oliver Deijni, Ian Miller, David Schmidt, Eboni Crosby and Neta Ezer, volleyball players Courtney Adler and Ky Bell, and cheerleaders Julie Engle and Amy Morris.

Tech’s baseball, golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis all made the NCAA Tournament this spring, and more than half of each team’s roster made the Dean’s List (6 of 11 men’s tennis, 7 of 10 women’s tennis). The same is true for women’s volleyball in the fall (9 of 14).

Also: 24 football players made Dean’s List for spring semester, with two (Muyres and Higgins) earning Faculty Honors. Six teams had aggregate GPA’s over 3.00, including women’s tennis, volleyball, golf, softball, men’s and women’s swimming.

“The staff in the Hearn Academic Center is delighted with the results of this year’s academic performance,” said Dr. Carole Moore, director of academic services for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. “Strategies that were implemented over three years ago are beginning to produce results. In the first weeks of the students’ arrival, extended orientation occurs that includes study skills enhancement, test taking, class preparation techniques, and other related topics. From the start, the academic advisors encourage our students to use all available resources. We have attempted to create a supportive environment in the Academic Center – one that allows student-athletes to reach their full intellectual potential.

“We have also begun to see a shift in some of the student-athletes’ attitudes about the importance of graduating and establishing careers. More and more of them are willing to put in extra effort to improve their in-class performance. It has been wonderful to see so many of them rewarded for their efforts.”

Eight current Tech student-athletes are President’s Scholars – football players Beau Cleland and Dan Dyke, swimmers Charles Gersbach, Richard Lau, Jennifer Lentz and Jennifer Christenson, track athlete Elizabeth Bulat, and volleyball player Jessica Dickerson. President’s Scholars represent the highest achievers in each incoming freshman class at Georgia Tech and are chosen through an intensive screening process. Three swimmers and one track athlete coming to Tech in the fall will be added to the list of President’s Scholars.

Three Tech athletes earned Verizon/CoSIDA Academic all-District honors and are up for Academic all-America honors: golfer Bryce Molder, baseball player matthew Boggs and tennis player Laura Ozolins. Nominees must have a cumulative 3.2 grade-point average or better to be nominated for this honor.

Molder, who is competing in the NCAA championship and may finish his career with the lowest stroke average in NCAA history, graduated May 9 with a 3.41 in management. He also was a first-team Academic all-America a year ago and is first-team golf all-America four straight years. He is one of six golfers (out of nine) to make Dean’s List in the spring, and is the top-ranked individual in college golf.

Boggs, a junior, started 56 games in the outfield and second base for Tech’s 41-20 NCAA team this year, batting .345. Ozolins, a junior, helped lead Tech’s women’s tennis team to the NCAA regionals, won the ACC No. 6 singles flight championship, posting a perfect 6-0 record in conference play.

Baseball all-America Mark Teixeira has been selected to receive the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement award for the DuPree College of Management at Tech. They are allowed to nominate one undergraduate student each year for consideration for the WSJ Student Achievement Award. Mark was chosen by the undergraduate office staff on the basis of his “impressive ability to manage a strong academic performance with excellence on the baseball field,” according to the Associate Dean, Neal Bennett. WSJ agreed with their assessment of his scholarship and has presented him with this honor this week. Teixeira, a first-team Academic All-America last year as well as National Player of the Year, is one of 19 baseball players (out of 32) to make the spring semester Dean’s List. He had a 3.75 GPA for the semester and has a 3.32 cumulative.
